I've previously mentioned Hear Music, the Starbucks label, before. The label seems to be signing the more singer/songwriter type music, and obviously it's prestigious to be associated with Sir Paul McCartney and, er, corporate coffee.
It must be an honor for Hilary McRae's debut album Through These Walls to be released the Hear Music label, in association with Stone Road Records.
According to her biography she's wanted to be a performing singer since the age of fifteen. She auditioned (and awarded) for a scholarship for the Berklee College of Music and ended up studying music in Boston.
After a brief stint as backup singer and keyboardist for Christian Castro, touring through Central and South America, she went went into the studio to record Through These Walls with producer Zach Ziskin.
"Every Day (When Will You Be Mine)" is the opening song on the album, making a really good use of the piano and horns. I believe that this song will ultimately represent her as the main single.
In fact, with the exception of a few songs, most of the songs are piano-based with some horns. This gives the album a much fuller sound.
Take for instance, the song "Better Off Alone" which might have been a depressing song, but set to trumpets and a fast-paced piano playing and the tone of the song sounds like a feeling of a relief.
On "Where Will We Be", McRae asks "Where will we be in a year?", and judging from the pop sensibility of this album, I will have to say: they will be on your iTunes.
Through These Walls is coming out on April 15th, but you can preview some tracks on her website and myspace. Pre-order the album on various website, including amazon and concord music.
