The Details
I'm actually familiar with The Details before this album, Draw a Distance. Draw a Border, through some downloads of a 2007's Parliament of Trees sampler on Virb.
The label's that's putting this out is based out of Winnipeg, Canada, and they have already released The Paperbacks's An Illusion Against Death and The Details' debut album.
Draw a Distance comes with a nice 16 lyric booklet inside a digipak packaging and I really generally like the minimalistic design and artwork by Lisa Friesen.
There's a few good tracks off the new album, ranging from all out alternative rock to sensitive rock.
I found myself unknowingly head-bopping to "Demons/Heathens", due to the music - but the lyrics kept me interested. It would seem that the songwriting team of Jon Plett and Sean Vidal includes a lot of dialogues and quotes in their songs ("Always, Always, Always, Never", "A National Anthem", "The Height of Land", etc), making their songs feel like little short personal stories.
There's a lot more to it than with its title for "I Asked What We Should Do. You Said, 'I Just Don't Want to Think'", this is a heart-felt love song. It's a beautiful song, even down to the cello & violins and when Plett sings "ch-color up my shameful eye".
"Reunion Souvenirs" proved to be my favorite track. It's a song that I'm sure will draw some wild dancing in concert. The drumming by Shaun Gibson really shines out on this track.
If you're a fan of 90s Alternative Rock music, do yourself a favor and check out this band.
Draw a Distance. Draw a Border is out now and can be ordered through Parliament of Trees and Scratch Records. They are next playing at West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg on 12 Apr 2008.
