I've previously mentioned about The OaKs before, about singer, Ryan Costello's humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan. On his first album, it seems that all the songs were inspired from the time he's spent in Afghanistan (and even contain some of the natives' random dialogs).
He's still trying to save the world with his second album, Songs for Waiting, which was released last Tuesday, March 4th.
I believe the release date was scheduled for SXSW, but if you live in Florida, they are having an official CD release party in April.
Anyway, there's an airplane engine noise on the first track, "The Two Calls (Of Dietrich Bonhoeffer)". The airplane does have a linger of 9/11, at least to me, because Costello left for Afghanistan as a result from that incident.
The title and song is about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was part of the German Resistance against Nazism. He was involved in plans to assassinate Adolf Hilter, but was found, arrested, and hunged in 1943. The song doesn't detailed his life, but it does talk about the call to ones belief... and it does set the tone for the rest of the songs to follow.
The war theme continues on with "War Changes Everything", about a friendship divided by war, and "Masood", which is about Akhmad Shah Masood, an Afghan hero who was killed in 2002. The later song is available as a free download on The OaKs' myspace.
Speaking of downloads, Songs for Waiting is available as a full download for only $6.50 via fizzkicks. This is such a reasonable price, considering that most bands charges $10 for a full album, even though the cost of distribution is relatively tiny compared the brick and mortars' version. You can also get the CD version for $10 through ccnow.com.
They are currently doing some SXSW dates (who isn't?) and around their homebase in Florida in April.
