♥ Pleasureboaters: Shirtless. Photo by Lauren Max |
From what I've read about Pleasureboaters, is that it seems that they've been together since 2005 and have steadily built up their fans through the Seattle, Washington, area. They finally have released a debut album called ¡Gross! on February 12, 2008.
Not really sure how I would describe their music, it sounds to me that they're almost noise artists doing thrash metal... which needs to experience live to fully appreciate what they're trying to do. I may have to include a live video of them for example.
There's actually no Spanish in their songs, despite their album title (the upside-down exclaimation mark or punto de interrogación final), but I was drawn to "Andalou" which looked at least Spanish.
There's a nice rift that starts the song off, before some shredding ... it's one of the better songs on the album.
I recommend checking out "D'Jeff", "Leopard Print Babyware", and "State Of The Union" (which is a nice starter song for the album).
You can pick up ¡Gross!, out now, on Don’t Stop Believin’ Records - and be sure to catch them on tour.

Justin Sconza and Colin Yarck together are Walter Meego, a DJ/band based out of Chicago, Illinois.
With already FOUR EPs (Walter Meego, Hollywood, Romantic, and Usually), their debut album, Voyager
is set for release on May 27, 2008.
I've got an advance copy a few months ago, so please note that the final mix may in fact be different. Please also note that I did not receive an approved album artwork, so the mock-up artwork I've included here is not the final album artwork.
I'm glad to see that Meego are not just about dance beats, but sings on many of their songs. The lyrics aren't "dum dum" either, they actually fit and sounds really great in accordance to the music.
Among the tracks worth looking into: "Forever" could be a good single. The more boogiable song, "Wanna Be a Star" features an infectious beat in the middle of the song. It's so good, I may have to pick this song to represent them.
Besides
"Tomorrowland" and "In My Dreams" (which makes sense that this is the
final song to end the album), their other songs are consistently dancy.
As with a lot of electronic music that I find, I need to be in the mood
to listen to it.
If you have the need for dance, you need to do yourself a favor and check out Walter Meego.
Keep an eye out for their debut album, Voyager, on May 27th on Almost Gold Records (who you may have heard of Peter Bjorn and John is on their label). Hear more music from them on 'space.

I wanted to mention Josiah Wordsworth's debut album, Wordsworth!, was released March 18th. I found out that his name is actually Jordan Slominski and he's based in St Paul, Minnesota.
I'll have to point out that I don't actually have his album or debut EP called Blue State, which was released in 2007, but based on the few songs I listened to, it sounds like a lot of piano with a rock n roll sensibility. The two songs I've heard on Wordsworth! are instrumentals, so I am assuming the rest of the album have no lyrics. It's still enjoyable.
"My Catholic Darling" feels like a frantic piano-driven song. Although I say frantic, I feel Slominski is very much in control of the song.
It would be interesting to see him perform live, especially on that particular song - and good news, I just checked and he's playing a few dates Gustavus Adolfus - Courtyard Cafe, St. Peter (23 Apr 2008) and Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (24 Apr 2008).
Once again, Wordsworth! is out now and you can purchase the album directly on his website.
Incidentally, I got this tip via Limerick Records, who's operating on donations - offering all their music available for download for free. I'm definitely going to mention Limerick Records on W♥M at a later time.
In the absence of CD sales, our artist's livelihoods depend on their live performances, merchandising, publishing, and other assorted sources of revenue. Our ultimate goal is that fans will learn about one of our artists, download that artist's music free of charge, and then, later, pay for a concert ticket, a t-shirt, or a DVD. We want to build a lifelong relationship with each fan, and always strive to give back much more than we take.

Running Still are from Brooklyn, New York, and they have a self-titled debut album that was released sometime earlier this year.
Their myspace lists that they're influenced by Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Radiohead, etc., and listening to their album, I can hear some of their influences in their song.
Their songs seems to be about life and personal experiences, such as in "Fly" with the line "life is just like playing cards/sometime you lose".
In "Ordinary", singer Asi Meskin, shows his doubt, stating what sounds like "I don't belong with, I'm ordinary."
Perhaps the most personal song, that I felt, was the love song called "My House", about running away from the world in the back seat of his car.
Running Still is out now and can be purchased directly on their website. They have a couple of tour dates coming up, so if you're in the area, check them out.

Free at Last is debut album by Josh Fix, a musician from San Francisco, California. I wanted to mention his current location, because apparently Fix was born in South Africa (!).
According to his biography, he was first noticed by the SF Chronicle (front cover story) in 2005, when he was asked to open up for the legendary The Who. Although Fix's sound isn't so much rock, I'm almost certain his piano-driven songs would be well-received by The Who's audience.
The track that really stood out will probably be "Rock And Roll Slut" with its very personal lyrics:
We're so punk, living by the bay
Chestnut and Divis, Starbucks everyday
Got the good job, working in a startup
marketing/PR up Palo Alto way
My favorite song is "Don't Call Me in the Morning", which is a very energic song that starts off the album. The song was clearly design to draw you in.
I am impressed that Fix wrote, produced, and performed on all the songs for his debut album, so he probably already knew "Don't Call Me..." would have to start very early in the album to make people interested in listening to the rest of the album.
You can download Free at Last via iTunes, I'm not sure where you can get a physical CD copy - but check with his record company, 1650 Entertainment.

I'm actually familiar with The Details before this album, Draw a Distance. Draw a Border, through some downloads of a 2007's Parliament of Trees sampler on Virb.
The label's that's putting this out is based out of Winnipeg, Canada, and they have already released The Paperbacks's An Illusion Against Death and The Details' debut album.
Draw a Distance comes with a nice 16 lyric booklet inside a digipak packaging and I really generally like the minimalistic design and artwork by Lisa Friesen.
There's a few good tracks off the new album, ranging from all out alternative rock to sensitive rock.
I found myself unknowingly head-bopping to "Demons/Heathens", due to the music - but the lyrics kept me interested. It would seem that the songwriting team of Jon Plett and Sean Vidal includes a lot of dialogues and quotes in their songs ("Always, Always, Always, Never", "A National Anthem", "The Height of Land", etc), making their songs feel like little short personal stories.
There's a lot more to it than with its title for "I Asked What We Should Do. You Said, 'I Just Don't Want to Think'", this is a heart-felt love song. It's a beautiful song, even down to the cello & violins and when Plett sings "ch-color up my shameful eye".
"Reunion Souvenirs" proved to be my favorite track. It's a song that I'm sure will draw some wild dancing in concert. The drumming by Shaun Gibson really shines out on this track.
If you're a fan of 90s Alternative Rock music, do yourself a favor and check out this band.
Draw a Distance. Draw a Border is out now and can be ordered through Parliament of Trees and Scratch Records. They are next playing at West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg on 12 Apr 2008.

What makes Kate Schutt's No Love Lost album very interactive is that she's on the Artist Share network.
You get a serial number with the purchase of the CD, which you'll need to enter into the artist share website. It then offers additional contents (demos, interviews, audio blog, etc) from the artist themselves - bridging that gap between artists and fans. What a great idea this is!
I am absolutely thrilled to hear Schutt's rendition of "The Glamorous Life", originally a Prince song written for Shiela E. Instead of the latin fused with funk song, Schutt strips the song to a steamy jazz version.
The whole album is very easy to listen to, mostly due to Schutt's calming voice. She can put anything on recording (e.g. her semi-talking on "The Young") and I can listen to it.
She's working on a new album, set for August 2008. Base on her demo song of "Jane Doe", I can tell you that her second album going to be fantastic.
No Love Lost is available now and can be purchased on Artist Share.

I've previously mentioned Hear Music, the Starbucks label, before. The label seems to be signing the more singer/songwriter type music, and obviously it's prestigious to be associated with Sir Paul McCartney and, er, corporate coffee.
It must be an honor for Hilary McRae's debut album Through These Walls to be released the Hear Music label, in association with Stone Road Records.
According to her biography she's wanted to be a performing singer since the age of fifteen. She auditioned (and awarded) for a scholarship for the Berklee College of Music and ended up studying music in Boston.
After a brief stint as backup singer and keyboardist for Christian Castro, touring through Central and South America, she went went into the studio to record Through These Walls with producer Zach Ziskin.
"Every Day (When Will You Be Mine)" is the opening song on the album, making a really good use of the piano and horns. I believe that this song will ultimately represent her as the main single.
In fact, with the exception of a few songs, most of the songs are piano-based with some horns. This gives the album a much fuller sound.
Take for instance, the song "Better Off Alone" which might have been a depressing song, but set to trumpets and a fast-paced piano playing and the tone of the song sounds like a feeling of a relief.
On "Where Will We Be", McRae asks "Where will we be in a year?", and judging from the pop sensibility of this album, I will have to say: they will be on your iTunes.
Through These Walls is coming out on April 15th, but you can preview some tracks on her website and myspace. Pre-order the album on various website, including amazon and concord music.

Today (March 11th) sees the release of Ctrl-Alt-Del, the sophomore album from The Diggs. With that title being so closely associated with computers and technology, you'd think that this was Kevin Rose's band... but no, The Diggs are a rock band from Brooklyn, New York.
Timothy Lannen (singer/guitars) and Robert Haussmann (bass) met as roommates near Long Island. They were both in a prior band together and decided to start The Diggs when that band broke up.
By 2005, with a permanent drummer Charlie Schmid, they had produced an EP called Orange and a debut album called Commute, under their own record label called Sugar Spun Records. The name of their label is interesting to note that it might have been inspired by "Sugar Spun Sister" by the Stone Roses, a band they strive to be.
I only have Ctrl-Alt-Del to listen to, but based on the basslines and tempo, they do sort of sound like The Roses, it's only too bad Lannen doesn't sound like Ian Brown. This is evident in their song, "Carreen", which you can download off their myspace.
I also liked the slow buildup on "Recovery Forever". The melody reminds me a lot of early 90's shoegazing, especially the layers of guitars near the end of the song.
"Brightness Falls" is a pretty good fast number. The song's quick too, by the time you hear "Sometime it's over", the song is already at an end.
Ctrl-Alt-Del is out now, and you can listen to the whole album on fanatic's ecard and if you like it, you can always pick up the album through CD Baby

Strix Vega is a rock band from California. Their name is a strange one, "Strix" is an old Roman legendary blood-sucking owl creature, while "Vega" is the name of a bright star. Their debut album is called Drunken Sky (2006) and reading their latest news, they're also putting together an EP and a sophomore album, to be released around the same time.
They're playing a few dates, including some festivals, such as the Red Gorilla Music Festival... which should draw in a pretty large crowd.
And as the title of their album suggests: you're meant to enjoy this album some cold beer and laying on the grass, staring at the sky.
Most of the songs on the debut sounds like they would translate well in a live setting because of the instrumentals parts could very well turn into an epic jam session (especially on "Autumn Gallows" and "Sex Box").
A couple of songs stood out for me, "Shady Oaks", which has some great lyrics with a backdrop of a spiraling guitars and a strange Tom Petty-vocals:
Your friends may leave
but your morale (?) may bring
But you'll travel
They still can never take
I think about the town rolling along
Yes, I do
Yes, I do
"Ms Loveless" sounds like it could be a Dylan song, but its song is more of a lazy southern song. This is a contrast to their more up-tempoed song, "Amber-Eyed Girl", which is placed as the next track. I liked that structure very much, and it made "Amber-Eyed Girl" my favorite track on the album.
Drunken Sky can be purchased on CD Baby and I believe they have some demos on their myspace that may appear on their future release.
